Before, during and after the visit

Speak the same language.

SameVox answers the clinic’s phone in the patient’s language, interprets the visit in real time, and goes home with her: her summary, her messages and her plan.

  3. Booked. The intake form arrives in Spanish.

8:05 am · the front desk

Before the visit · Reception

The clinic reads every call in English.

Overnight, Reception answered calls and texts in Vietnamese, Mandarin and Spanish. Each one is transcribed and translated, bookings are on the schedule, and anything that needs a person goes to the front desk.

  1. A new patient called in Vietnamese.
  2. Her words and the English, side by side.
  3. Booked, with the intake form sent.
  4. It’s already on Dr. Chen’s schedule.

10:42 am · the exam room

The doctor says “One tablet, twice a day, with breakfast and dinner.” SameVox says it to the patient in Spanish, Vietnamese or Mandarin. The patient repeats it back, SameVox confirms that it matches, and the plan is sent to her phone.

Why this matters

Twenty-seven million people in the US speak English less than “very well.”1

A phone interpreter costs a clinic two to five dollars a minute, so many small clinics lean on bilingual staff or a patient’s child.2

Nearly a third of US hospitals offer their patient portal only in English.3

11:20 am · Dr. Chen’s desk

After the visit · Clinic portal

Nothing goes home until she approves it.

SameVox drafts the visit summary in English and in the patient’s language, with every key fact read back during the visit. Dr. Chen reviews it and sends it. Messages arrive in English, and replies go back in the patient’s language.

  1. Both languages, side by side.
  2. Approve, and it goes to Rosa.
  3. An inbox in English, replies in her language.

6:15 pm · at home

After the visit · Her app

Her visit, in her language. Long after she leaves.

Everything in the app comes from what her care team said and approved. The English original is always one tap away.

  1. Her next visit and today’s medicine, at a glance.
  2. The summary, read aloud in Spanish.
  3. A question for the nurse, in her own words.
  4. Reminders from the plan Dr. Chen approved.

Why we’re building SameVox

This fall I spent nine days in a hospital, translating every conversation between my parents and their doctors. My mom speaks English, but medical English is hard, especially when you’re scared. Most families don’t have someone who can do that. SameVox is for them.
